It Is Finished

I was glad to hear that Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign last Saturday and endorse Barack Obama. However, my elation is not due to the victory of Senator Obama but, rather, that it is just all finally over.

Unfortunately, we will now be treated to a general campaign in which we will be given the false-choice of the complete nanny-state or nearly no government intervention at all in our lives.

When I was younger both socialism and libertarianism appealed to me. Now that I am older, and perhaps a little wiser, I prefer the middle of the road, a little here and a little there.

Maybe the problems we face as a society and a nation cannot be completely solved by government action or the private sector. Is it possible that some combination of the two would be better, and that with each passing day the need for government action or private action changes? For example, wouldn’t it have been better if the government had regulated the mortgage industry ten years ago rather than creating a new federal bureaucracy to oversee it now?

When we go to the voting booth this November it appears that we will have a choice between an idealistic African-American activist who still believes that the United States is a fundamentally racist nation, or an ancient warrior who still believes that military victory is the equivalent of political or diplomatic victory. Anyone acquainted with history knows that victory on the battlefield does not necessarily ensure victory in war, just ask Pyrrhus.

In short, do we really have a choice this November?
